As much as I am a Question Authority sort of individual, I must side with
the Navy on this one. All these two young pilots would have had to do was
call up their base ops on the radio and request permission to divert for a
SAR effort. It probably would have been granted. Happens all the time,
without permission.

What the article stated was that an attempt to contact pensacola was
made, but no radio contact able, so they hit NOLA, when they refueled
in NOLA, they called base and advised, went back up, did more good,
then went home before dark
