Measure the protrusion of the piston above the block when you have the
head off. If any oil leaked into the #1 cylinder, it can cause a
hydrolock which will bend the connecting rod. Careful of whiplash when
you turn the crank by hand. The spring on the vacuum pump causes the
chain to lurch forward.

I don't know the specs on an aluminum head, but for the cast iron
heads, cracks less than 10mm in length were acceptable. Most common
cracks were prechamber to valve and valve to valve. I had one head
that had 9-10 mm cracks in each possible position, and it had been

Hmm. On the one hand, combustion pressure is a whole lot more than
test pressure. OTOH, people have driven tens of thousands of miles
with cracked aluminum heads and no real troubles. I imagine the
vast majority of #14 heads still in use have those little cracks
