Greg, Good luck with your new NAS. FYI, my old, budget DS211J has a
gigabit network connection. Do I am surprised that any current NAS systems
have 100Mb LAN interfaces. I'll be interested in your experience with the
WD unit.

Did you put a SATA card in it?
Two, in fact. For whatever reason, SW RAID performance
absolutely stunk when both drives were on the same card.
A second cheapie card, flashed to be Mac-friendly, was
the easiest solution. I suspect driver problems, but
there's a limit to how much work I want to
10 to $175. Its getting to the
point where the charge controller is more expensive than the panel.

I wanted a low power NAS to run 24/7
So how low _is_ it? The Mac G4 (Sawtooth) I'm using for RAID NAS
is running about 30W with 2 2TB drives in it, plus a boot drive.
(And no video card.) That's 24x7, but it is also our web server.
If it were not, and I really cared, I could set it to power up

Is there a box you can buy to plug 5 into for this drive?

I really like my Synology DS211J NAS. I wanted a low power NAS to run 24/7
for my main home storage. I have relatively small hard disks in the actual
PCs and I wanted to access data from at least two PCs at different ends of
the house. I got a Synology 211J which is low performance but also low

Today, Newegg has a deal on

I agree with Tim.
After researching storage options to a level of detail I never planned, I came
to much the same conclusion. If I was going with an off the shelf solution it
would be Synology. FreeNAS was really attractive, given the high level of
configurability it offered.

I was seriously considering going this route, but I got my existing NAS sorted

I have thought of setting up a NAS but am somewhat put off by the cost and
bulk. Is there a compact and inexpensive solution? I am thinking of a
Linux setup utilizing-let's say 3- 2 1/2" drives. Does someone make a small
box for a micro-atx MB that would accommodate 3 such drives?
