[MBZ] OT - Phono pre-amps

2009-02-14 Thread OK Don
The pre-amp in my old Sony TA-1150 is flacky (most likely the switches, but can't get to them for a proper cleaning), so I'm looking for a decent but cheap pre-amp. Most of the records I want to play/record are 78's. Does this look like a reasonable unit? http://www.phonopreamps.com/tc778pp.html -

Don - I purchased a TC740 unit from them a couple of years ago for use with my Dual 1287 turntable and I have been very happy with it but of course it doesn't have the 78 setting you desire. OTOH since the 78's have no need for the RIAA re-equalization possibly one could use this unit's line input

If you are recording/digitizing your records, Audacity will let you record at 33 or 45 then do the post-process speed up to get them to sound right. I digitized some old 78s I got at an estate sale, worked OK given what they sounded like to begin with. --R barry Stark wrote: Don - I purchas

I think I will get the 78 model pre-amp, and a cartridge that will take a 78 needle, and "do it right". Thanks for the input on the pre-amp. Glad to hear tha

I didn't know that Audacity could do that. However, for the effort in cleaning and playing all these records, I'm going to "do it right" - it's not that much more of the total effort. On Sun, Feb 15, 2009 at 11:34 AM, Rich Thomas < richthomas79td...@constructivity.net> wrote: > If you are recordi

I ordered the TC778 last night (and a proper 3 mil needle) -- we'll see! Phono inputs are mic level. There will not be enough gain if > it's connected to a line input - unless it's a ceramic cartridge. > > And 78 requires a EQ curve similar to the RIAA, but not quite as > extreme. Flat won't sound
