As I noted before, the Subaru's are noted for failing wheel bearings. Another
possibility is one or both rear tires being "saw tooth" from the rear toe
adjustment being off. Sounds just like a bad wheel bearing. Easy enough to
check by eyeballing it, and running your gloved hand over the surf
I'm becoming convinced that I'll be replacing a wheel bearing in the future but
not sure which one, yet. Based on my research, the wheel bearing assembly is a
unit that is just bolted to the knuckle from the inside but it could be a tight
fit. The job doesn't look hard if the bearing unit isn'
Merry Christmas to all.
Thanks to Rick and Peter. I was not aware that this is a frequent problem in
Outbacks. I especially appreciate Peter's technical discussion and insights.
I think you may be right. I just returned from town with 18 cases of cat food
in the back and it did sound louder
It seems like wheels bearings are a common malady on Subarus.

I used split boots on 111/110 and VW. They work fine if you are careful
putting them on.

Having just finished replacing the third wheel bearing on the Golf, I'd guess a
wheel bearing, especially if they are similar to the MB rear bearings.
Since those are double race ball bearings, they don't make the same noise as
tapered rollers when they go, they tend to hum, then growl, then how

From what you wrote, I posit the 60,000 mile service, which replaced to CV
boots, was the starting point of the noise.
It suggests to me that "something" was not bolted back on correctly, and
that is the cause...

Sounds like a bad rear axle if it's similar to my 300TD noise.

My 2008 Outback has been making an odd humming noise ever since the 60,000 mile
dealer service. The hum varies frequency with speed but does not seem to vary
with light acceleration or coasting. Strong acceleration drowns out the hum.
The hum isn’t loud and
