[MBZ] Parasitic Draw

2020-03-28 Thread Jerry Herrman via Mercedes
Is a parasitic draw test a procedure that can be applied to any car? Today I discovered that the 2005 Honda Odyssey, which had been parked unused for the last three weeks or so, has a totally dead one year old Bosch battery. It took a charge so I left it on the charger for a few hours. It works n

I thought I had submitted this acknowledgement, but apparently I did not. Thanks to anyone else who commented on my question subsequently. Thanks, Dan Penoff, for your prompt response and the clear instruction for determining the source for "leaking" electrical current. Thanks also to Craig fo

Jerry, The ideal way to do a parasitic draw test is with an ammeter in line between the negative battery post and the negative battery cable. Hook everything up, roll the windows down, open the hood and let the car sit for maybe 15-30 minutes, as some electronic systems won’t “sleep” right away

need to wait until the computers go back to sleep to see if there is really a parasitic current drain. -Original Message- From: Mercedes On Behalf Of Craig via Mercedes Sent: Saturday, March 28, 2020 4:24 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: Craig Subject: Re: [MBZ] Parasitic Draw On Sat

The test lamp as shown is excellent on older gear, but the computer-controlled stuff is trickier. Also, even a 20mA parasitic draw is enough to cause problems, but not really enough to make light. My favorite technique remains to loosen the ground clamp, stab the center of the post with one amm

I'd say this is normal. The clock, for one, always draws power. As others have noted the computer(s) will draw some current when first connected. That draw will decrease as the computer powers up and gets its act together. It probably sits in some kind of standby mode until activated by turning

Just to complicate things, some cars like the 06 E350 MB I have been struggling with, have an auxiliary battery - I removed the primary battery for 6 weeks or more and the radio stations were remembered. When doing a parasitic draw test, should I also disconnect the Aux Battery?  I put a test
