Wouldn't sand paper risk embedding garnet particles in the metal, which
would prevent a good seal? I've got some really fine wet/dry paper, I
think in grades from 800 up to 5000, that I use for sharpening wood
chisels. I can easily get a mirror shine on those.

Other than tongue, the alternate and far more effective means of lapping
injector halves is with a glass plate and emery cloth or very fine sandpaper.

Yeah, the one time I tried the DIY injector rebuild didn't go so well. Lapping
the injector halves was the worst. It was probably a week before I could get
the taste of diesel out of my mouth.
