All,
I am looking into newer Mercedes to replace my 190D 2.5 turbo that was
rearended lat week. The link below is for a local 1996 E300D. Are there issues
besides troulble with the wire harness. I have seen one or two others listed
that require engine work because of broken cams.
Hadn't heard of cam problems on a '96, maybe I'm not up to speed on that?
Seems like broken cams come from defective timing chains, and I think those were
gone by 1994.
There are some plastic fittings in the fuel system that like to fail and make
the OM606 run like crap, I think the variable
If you can move up to a 98 or 99 you will not regret it. The car is actually
fun to drive in the city after they put a turbo and intercooler in it.
If you can find a 99 with ESP (stability control), you are golden.

I think the '96 W210 had almost exactly the same engine as my '95 124 body..
I found the 606 to be sturdy engine. But you have to put up with a few
idiosyncrasies.
I recall the early 210's had problems with the strut towers rusting out.
You might want to check that area of the chassis.

I think the wiring harness issue was resolved by then. Still have evap
issues, major problems are rust. Spring mounts can even rust. Also,
that engine is famous for having glow plugs break off and get stuck in
the head requiring the head to be pulled to correct.
