All,
My 77 240D battery is draining every couple days. It
occurs with a couple different good batteries, so it's
either the charging system or a current drain. Is
there a simple way to check the alternater and voltage
regulator? I only have a small multimeter.
Thanks,
Bruce

If pulling fuses doesn't stop it, it may be a bad diode in the alt. Just
went through that with the TD. In that case, the charging indicator light
sometimes would glow with the car shut off and the key out. The light may
be dim enough that is noticeable only after dark. If your light is on w

There are those on this list who have had abysmal success with the mc
I was not advocating buying from mcparts. Just stating the price range. I
was hundreds of miles from home, and couldn't sit until parts came from
Rusty, no matter how fast he is. Besides it was a weekend, and nothing
would have shipped until Monday.

That's correct Marshall. The climate controls are
manual in this car - 77 240D.
Also, I didn't see any mention in the thread about a
voltage regulator...any way to isolate and test it?
Thanks,
Bruce

The regulator should hold the charge voltage below about 14-14.4 V under
any condition. T

No, the 240D did not.

I think I found the problem. The alternator isn't
generating any current. The barcode label on it says
"World Class Remanufacturing". Thanks all for the
help.

When I needed a alternator for mine the prices were usually around $100 for a
remanufactured one and thats a genuine Bosch. Thats a 55 amp so they aren't
overly expensive

did you pull the VR and make sure it's not just worn out brushes?

Yes, the brushes looked fine, just like those in the
picture Marshall posted.
