Is it belt stretch/wear, or is the adjuster working back in?
Excessive vibration can cause loosening. Things like a bad
diode, damaged pulley, etc.

It has the whimpy alternator.
I will check pulleys for wear.

My alternator is fine. It was replaced one year ago.

Yes hardware is correct. Car was dealer serviced till I bought it. I didn't
change anything to make it wrong.

Your alternator is going bad -- my old 22D did that, and when I took
it in to get it fixed (it eventually stopped charging well) all I got
back was the case. Bearings were shot and the rotor was eating the
stator, caused huge amounts of drag and therefore wearing the belt out.

The 617 turbos had dual alternator belts.

No additional data - huh? So all we know is a OM616 that the belt
slips.
What year?

I keeps coming back, alternator belt. I keep tightening it at least twice a
year and it likes to loosen up. This is getting old and the squeal is grating
My one indie got so frustrated that he recommended belt dressing.

Yes. It's really a winter problem. On a warm day it stops quickly, on a cold
day it makes me want to pull my hair out!

I don't know why but both my 240D's did that routinely when it was cold
or damp. New belts, changing tension had little effect. Does it go away
when it warms up?

You want to see how far the V belt goes into the pulley, generally when
everything is new the top of the V belt will be flush with the top of
the pulley.
You can also have a look at the V in the pulley, if it is shiny at the
bottom, you know you have a problem.

It is about 5 yrs old but this has been happening since it was new. It's a

How do you check for a worn pulley?

How old is the belt?
What brand is it?
Sometimes it happens that the pulley V is worn so bad the belt only
grips on the bottom, check that.
If the pulleys are good, I would suggest a new quality belt.
There is no oil or such leaking onto it?
