A posting in a previous thread finally hit me this morning. The problem was that when OpenBSD was installed on the CF, the CF was in the secondary IDE slot. Then when being run it was placed in the primary IDE slot on the alix board. The alix was expecting wd0a in the fstab, and was fiding wd1a.
