But support for EXA is also going away with all the userland side, pre DRI/DRM 2D acceleration code. To do reasonably fast graphics you'd need to either maintain a fork of some old X server release or move to more recent hardware. As I explained here several times, you cannot use custom mode lines with the vesa driver. You have to use one of the video modes provided by the BIOS of your card. So look at Xorg.0.log when using the vesa driver and see if there's a 1280x800 mode listed. If not (which is probably the case) you're screwed.
