Thanks to your help, I finally got mjpegtools CVS to compile on my SID
Debian system (automake 1.7 was missing, version 1.4 was installed).
I then tried to use mjpegtools on my .avi videos, in order to test some
new options available in the CVS version. I obtain a very bad image. I
though
Dave told me "as" corresponds to the GNU binutils assembler. However,
it's already installed on my SID Debian system:

libsdl-dev and I got ride of that error message:
