i have a set of detailed plans that allows for a
mod_ssl front end with mutliple backends, of
which i have built mod_perl and mod_php. this
version works in a virtualhost environment (i did
not setup the php for virtualhost, but that is trivial).
it has not yet been tested in a heavy production

on our SuSe 7.3 server I run the shipped ready-made installation of
Apache/mod_perl using DSO.
It works fine, no special problems so far.
Please don't give up, it's worth another try!

Apache Toolbox (http://www.apachetoolbox.com/)? Before you give up
completely it might be worth trying.
