Depending how charming it is I guess. Some slight fold wear is fine by me but
things like severe fading, bleed throughs and chunks of paper missing I
wouldn't call patina.

Great review
J Fields did a tremendous job on our magic posters,
Kenny, but took forever and a day. If you're patient, it's worth the
wait. They are the ones who don't want to remove my chartex, so that's
what started my search.

I agree 100% that definitions of severity of patina differ and not all
defects would be considered charming or even patina but just serious flaws
and defects. Slight discoloration maybe "patina". Major chunks gone is just
termed garbage!

Hi JR,
Interesting you mentioned how you built your house
to accommodate poster space. We did the same thing a few weeks ago with
Alan. We bought him a condo closer to the hospital. He found one
with 12' ceilings! Then, he walled off the sliding glass doors with 2
removable walls. Now h

This is a subject I have been thinking about ever since I bought a lobby card
several months ago that I am sure is a reproduction. The card was from a
reputable and long-standing seller from whom I have bought cards in the past,
and in this particular case, had purchased several cards at once.

I have been told by all the pros that a poster shouldn't fade unless it's
exposed to sunlight. Or an fairly bright artificial light. If that's the
case, restoring and backing won't help -- the inks will continue to fade in the
sunlight. If the fading isn't too far advanced, I woul
First off let me chime in on daybills. I don't think I've ever seen a repro daybill especially with the rugged smoot waxlike back of the poster. It's just not feasible to repro those items. And yes there were lots of them. Every little twon had a theater. Great country great stone litho art.

The sellers of questionable material have been using the "it wouldn't be
economically feasible to reproduce that item" crap for a long time. They
often pull that one out when trying to justify the fake 70's inserts. Right

I don't doubt your story, and I also believe that your conclusion may very
well be dead on, but come on, you've never seen a dead mint genuine card

I've had lobby cards and posters 70-90+ years old with no pinholes and no

MoPo,
Mr. Poe has a treat for you (for us) Universal horror movie fans. He's dug deep into musty old archives and pulled out a number of very rare, never seen before (in most cases, anyway), behind the scenes 8x10 movie stills from Dracula, Frankenstein, Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man, Ghost O

I agree with both Todd and Zeev,
I bought a gorgeous lobby card from The Old Dark House over a year ago which
looks nearly mint. It is absolutely original. I bought it from Steve Sally
who is a completely honest, fantastic dealer.
In addition, I bought near mint cards from Todd last year
I agree. I have the one from the thirties and it is essential.

JR,
I do agree with you that if one has something to compare to, then determination can be much easier.
However, I have to disagree about the artificially "aging" aspect. Pinholes, creases, wrinkles etc. can be INDICATORS of age. But they are not reflecting "aging", they are reflecting "handlin
Yes, Will Eisner's passing is certainly of note. He was an exceptional artist with such a feel for continuity and progression in the panels. His Spirit Sections in the Sunday newspapers remain pinnacles of the panelological art!

Michael,
I didn't mean to infer that an expert (or even a well-verse amateur)
could not detect artificial aging, if they thought to look closely enough. But

Eisner will certainly be missed.. I meant to send on a note about 2 days

I'm lucky enough to have had many Eisner originals in my career as an art

splash page that I sold in 1993 for $7500.
To further comment on this, many people aren't duplicating 60+ year old paper but instead are duping Clint Eastwood, Godfather, things like that, even impossible titles like Halloween.
How much do you need to age a 30 year old heavy card stock glossy lobby card to fool most people? None at all
