Don't forget, NSS numbers have nothing to do with when the film was
released. They're internal codes for when the film's posters were printed.
So, if they printed the posters 6 months in advance or 3 days before
release, the numbers could be misleading...

2 out of 5 of the nominees for best picture this year didn't go wide until 2005, that is true, but by all accounts those two were Sideways and Million Dollar Baby, not Million Dollar Baby and The Aviator.
Aviator actually went wide on Christmas Day to roughly 1,800 theaters, it has in the next
USA issue posters w/NSS serial numbers don't always match up with "recorded"
release dates.
The top examples (besides "The Best Years of Our Lives") are "The Graduate"
(68/26) and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (64/1).
Oscar has a big hand in some of these "mis-matches," w/pressure to "qualify"

Yes, IMDB cannot be counted 100% (it is pretty darn good though) but checking the Release Dates section of these types of films will usually reveal a year-end release, with th
IMDB is full of mistakes. Don't count on them as the Bible of movies.

Often I find titles listed on IMDB are usually off by
a year or so for some reason.
I may have a poster dated 1948 but IMDB will list it
as 1947, etc.
