I heard Lucy Calkins (sorry about that spelling) speak last week in Detroit.
I believe she mentioned 4th - 5th grade as being a good time for lit.
clubs. The most important thing is that the students are trained in how to
handle
the lit. club. She showed videos of clubs in action and you

I trained in a model very similiar to this in California almost 12 years
ago.
Now we are forced to make decisions that put the adopted curriculum
program implementation at the center of our decisions and not the child.
We are in constant battle with what we teach overshad
I have set up a yahoo group called
'wordstheirway' if anyone wants to join. Just go to the yahoo groups page

and type in 'wordstheirway'
Everyone is welcome. I am hoping we can share what we are doing in the
classroom at all levels.

Glad to see this question. I have done literature circles with second graders,
but I ran the group myself. We usually start lit. circles at 4th grade, but I
think it could happen earlier. And I don't think it has to be either/or.

If you have the $$ or if your school does, order the supplementary
books. There is one for each developmental level that has loads of
sorts in it. They are available from the same publisher as WTW (I
think it's Prentice-Hall). Their price is worth the time you save!
