In my school, the reading cadre chose to focus on comprehension strategies this

school-wide next year. it looks to me like it would be comprehensive
and easy to administer and provide all the necessary information. but

I love the Fountas and Pinnell benchmark! We used the Slosson word
reading test and then the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Guided Reading
tests. The tests are very good, you do a running record and
comprehension section to end up with an instructional reading level.

I'm wondering if anyone uses any picture books to accompany Hatchet?
Do any of you have good titles of picture books on the topics of survival, the
Canadian wilderness, and/or living alone?
Thanks in advance.

Over the last few months I have been trying out the Fountas and Pinnell
Benchmark Kits 1 and 2 (on first-fourth graders). I really like it and
feel it is very different from the DRA. I agree with Sandi that it feel
less of a test of memory--kids aren't penalized for either using the book

I am a Literacy Coach in a grades 3 and 4 school. Some of my

I love Modifying Four Block for the upper grades. Have been using it for

change these practices.
Thanks for the help!

Deb,
The Four Blocks series of books is what led me to MOT, via Debbie Miller's
Reading With Meaning. Although I now teach fourth grade, many of the
procedures, strategies, and philosophies still thread their way through my
lessons every day.

You can do guided reading within a lit circle construct. Just think of it
as front loading for a lit circle that struggles a bit.
