Hi Joy,
If I had to peg him I would put him closer to a holistic approach to teaching.
I don't know if he himself would say he is a whole language proponent. In any
case, he is a wonderful person and very knowledgeable about literacy and
technology.

I read The Sixth Grade Nickname Game by Gordon Korman to my fifth graders.
They loved it and it has so many characters it would be easy to
compare/contrast.

Hi Everyone,
Awhile ago, Lisa posted the date of Ellin's conference 5/2 and I registered to
go (I live in New York). I am going by myself and wondered if it is at the
same Hilton that was recommended on the brochure (Drury Lane)? I called to
make reservations and they said they didn't have

Hi Mary,
I'm in NC, too. If you contact Dr. Ruie Pritchard at NCSU ([EMAIL
PROTECTED]), she could point you in the right direction. She is in charge of
the Capital Area Writing Project. If you aren't close to Raleigh she may be
able to direct you to another Writing Project center near you.
If you are wanting to use just one read aloud, and compare characters using a
VENN within that book, I would suggest a book titled Horns & Wrinkles by Joseph
Helgerson. It's a fantasy kids can lost in with a bunch of fun characters. It
will be easy to use 11 year-old Duke, Claire (Duke's cousin)
This was something that I did in first grade. I read Miss Rumphius and Johnny
Appleseed ( Steven Kellogg).
It was easy to compare and contrast.

Hello All,
I am looking for a good read aloud for sixth graders so they can compare and
contrast 2 characters using a venn diagram (2 or 3 circles) and then develop
one character using the vocabulary from the text.
I eventually want to do this with The Cay by Theodore Taylor, but I want to

Not sure if this is how to post a response... it' been awhile! I am
