This year I am realizing that the text that you choose is critical to
generating meaningful discussions in book clubs and mentoring student
writing. I am finding our reading department is lacking books that
would create a rich dialogue or model a strong essay. I think it would

Shannon,
This book has really helped with how my kids comprehend math. We use EDM, and I
love to use the KWC. This was my first year teaching all four subjects.
Normally at 5th grade in our school district the students have 2 core teachers
divided into Math/Science and LA/SS. It has been aweso

Jennifer,
I would be grateful to have a list of books to refer to for book clubs.
This year I have not only done lit circles in my third grade class but I
have hosted a book club before school for very high functioning readers
(fourth grade level and above). It has been difficult choosing texts,

I have a new critical concern. I teach third grade in a school that is
all about teaching reading strategies. We have been told not to teach
novels - better to have quantity than quality - and we have been told to
stick to teaching the strategies from grades K-4, often times using the
same texts!
Hi all - My call for help isn't nearly as critical as Leslie's, but I'm hoping
someone will save me anyway! I taught a really successful writing segment last
year in second grade on heroes, but cannot find my file anywhere!! What I need

Dear Leslie,
I can't understand how anyone who knows anything about teaching or reading
could say to a teacher, it is not your job to have children like reading. Oh
my gosh. And, to use the same books, over and over. That doesn't make sense.
My advise to get your children to internalise what
Hi Leslie
I have been utilizing a variety of novels for book clubs for several years
now in my 6th grade LA classes. I worried about how will I know what is
going on in all these books that different book clubs are reading. It
worried me when I first started. I found it isn't a problem I can usu
Leslie,
That sounds scary!! I guess too much of any one thing can be a deal breaker!

Hi all-
I just left the IRA Exhibitor Hall with my newly purchased Primary
Comprehension Toolkit. I have heard some wonderful things about the
toolkit being used in the upper elementary. So far, I am the only one in
my school implementing the strategies based on Harvey and Goudvis ( I

It's obviously not the teaching that has gone wrong, but the

Our kids are doing lots of things well, but they struggle so with theme and
main idea. Having been very impressed with the discussion in test talk that
relates to differentiating between theme and plot, I wondering if it is
sometimes a language issue. When I was in the classroom, I talked abou
I don't have any ideas for the primary kit but I do have the intermediate

You will love it I use the upper one and it is wonderful. Once you get the
hang of it you'll use it as a great resource to help guide your
instruction. Look at the assessment pieces they are very helpful as well.
