We use SIPPS in a much more structured way. The theory is if we don't use the
script provided with the program we have no check on whether the program
worked. Having purchased this and other interventions with title 1 funds, we
need accountability as to whether it worked or not. If we don't use
Many times we have our students focus on the same skill, in their reading
book and their independent reading. It helps them practice and apply the
learned skill to something they can read independently.

progressive public school in the mid 40's Can you imagine being
progressive then? I don't remember phonics, but I know we were later than

I also have been the lone Jewish teacher but I made it my business to share my
holiday with the students. We made latkes and doughnuts, lit candles daily
for eight days, told the Maccabee story , etc. Other teachers covered my class

We use DIBELS and use the retell section as a guide to comprehension. We can
assess the difference by noting whether the students did a word by word
retelling or gave a summary of the passage.

When our district adopted DIBLES about 7 years ago. We talked about the
possibilty of Palm Pilots then. And here we are 7 years later and we're still
talking! However, the online datasystem although sporadically

If kids have books have a selection of books they can read independently, they
are much more willing to choice from a topic (sports) or any genre they like.
The key is to have books students can read independently (without struggling)

We have found that when we get the kids involved in conversations before they
write, they have a much better sence of what they write. So, if we, as a class,
small group, or pair, share what we've read, in terms of strategies good
readers use, they are much more able to put those conversations
We like to have genuine conversations with students about what they've read.
The students use the colored dots to remember character details or some
important visualization they got from the text, as well as inferences or
conclusions they were able to draw from the text. With these aids. marked

We used the same technique using color coded self sticking dots to denote
different ideas, i.e. characters thoughts and actions, words in the text that
created pictures (visulaizing) setting, problem solution, inferences, etc.

I also believe silent independent reading is key...however, with a caveat.
1. To be sure students are actually reading during that time, we need to
conference with them daily just for a minute or two to check for comprehension.
2. A Jot Journal to write a sentence about what they read today.
I think that Open house time is a fabulous opportunity to share that! You
probably won't have as captive an audience any other time of the year!
