Chris and Cindy Edwardson found a black-backed woodpecker on Sunday May 10,
along one of the designated mountain bike paths in Hartley park. The path
is in the Kenwood area of the park.

I have 2 nest boxes with BCCH nests in them. The nests are empty. Prior to
this weekend, there had been a lot of activity at these boxes. Are BCCH early
nesters and has their brood already fledged? The main reason for my question
is that I have a pair of BLBI inquiring about renting the
There was a second Minn Birding Weekends (MBW) trip in Murray,
Cottonwood, and Watonwan Co's this past weekend, May 9-10. Although we
did not relocate the Say's Phoebe or Western Tanager found on the
previous MBW or find any true rarities, there were some noteworthy

I made a quick stop at Roberts to see if the Hooded Warbler was still around
(apparently not), and there were very few passage migrants at all. For
example, almost all of the White-crowned Sparrows and Yellow-rumped Warblers
there Sunday seemed to have moved on, with few new arrivals. But

Possibly the same WEGR I reported on May 3 was along the north shore opposite
the Goodhue Co. boat ramp (the western one, not the eastern one by the
campground). It is visible only from Goodhue Co.
Shorebirds are essentially non-existent at the lake in spite of large expanses
There was a Warbling Vireo working its way around Diamond Lake south to north
in South Minneapolis at noon today. It was tough to see but its distinctive
song made it easy to locate.
Directions: I-35W to Diamond Lake Road. East on Diamond Lake Road. Right
(south) on Portland Avenue.
Colder day than normal (42-53 degrees) but we came up with 123 species.
Still very low with the warblers (7 kinds) and didn't get any Red Shouldered
hawks from the 4 usual sites. Worked real hard to get shore birds with the
most in the Upsala sewage ponds. Bowlus and Upsala ponds were overflowing
St. John's Arboretum Birding Morning w/ Bob Russell, 4 small groups had a low
composite of 91 species on the SJU campus/woods/prairie. Only ten warblers
seen and all in few numbers. Of note: 1-Blackburnian, few Tennessee,
Orange-crowned, Yellow, BW, 1-N.Waterthrush, lots of Ovenbirds.
St. Paul Audubon's annual Warbler Weekend was held May 8-10 at Villa Maria in
Frontenac. 135 t otal species including 19 warbler species. Other notables
on included Henslow's Sparrow singing on territory at Frontenac State Park (May
10) a Western Grebe on Lake Pepin just north of Lake

the weekend of August 7, 8, and 9.
The maximum number of participants is 10 people per guide. In that way we can
focus on each individual's skill level. Our time is spent half on field trips
and half in classroom
