Some of you may already know this. I was mistaken in my last post, and have
now learned that all construction by Interstate Mills at the Great Western
Industrial Park will be on the west side of the railroad tracks only.
This plan will leave the two eastern ponds, grassy fields, and most of
There were two merlins buzzing the neighborhood last night and making a hell of
a din. Saw/heard one this morning as well.
This was about the exact date that I saw a pair of merlins last year. At that
time they were present, and obvious, for a couple of weeks.

We've still got Redpolls at our feeders in Chaska this morning, with about 50

This year's Annual Midwest Crane Count will take place this Saturday (4/13)
from 5:30 to 7:30 am. This allows the counter to be on site when the pair
greets each other at dawn. I have one or two slots to fill to cover Dakota
Co. and would welcome someone to ride along with me to keep me awake.
Despite the miserable weather, a few martins have returned to our martin
colonies at Three Rivers Park District this week. We have put up some
of their housing to give them shelter, but hopefully the miserable cold
wet weather won't last too long. Being aerial insect eaters, several
days of such
Recovering from cancer surgery has its rewards. Watching out my front window I
have seen between 25-50 redpolls feeding on my deck.
Dear MOU Member,
As you know the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union has had a close relationship
with the Bell Museum for over half a century. The museum has for several
years now had plans for a fantastic new facility that would benefit the MOU
and everyone in the state with an interest in natural
A moment ago, my platform feeder just outside my window had Purple Finches,

DEJU, one Fox Sparrow, Common Redpolls (who returned after a two day

I don’t see black ducks in Washington County very often. This afternoon there
were three in a small pond at the intersection of Bailey Rd and Radio Drive.
The pond is at the SW corner of the intersection.

I stopped by the Great Blue Heron rookery at Coon Rapids dam Tuesday and viewed
it from the East side. I noticed a grizzly scene with what appears to be 2
herons hanging upside down from a nest area. The nest is about the 6th most
Southern one and the birds appear to be bound by their feet.
