Yesterday’s extreme southerly winds spurred me to survey a roost. It was
difficult to get an accurate count with so much swirling about in the wind and
in-and-out of the roost action. I estimated there to be about 60, which is a
normal number for the early returning days.

A Western Grebe was observed about 1:00 on Centerville L. and was still there
when I departed. Viewing was from Hidden Spring Park on the southeast side of
the lake. To reach the park, turn west from Centerville Road onto Heritage St.
and drive 0.3 miles.

Washington Co. across from Prescott, Wisconsin. It was closer to the Minnesota
side of the river and was still there when I departed.

This morning around 11:00 the Mountain Bluebird at Schaar”s Bluff Park was
observed. It was frequenting the area between the park road and the children’s
play area that is at the easternmost parking lot.

A lone early Baird’s Sandpiper was observed towards noon today at the west end
of L. Byllesby. Viewing was from the cemetery point.

Among the shorebirds found at 190th St. and Fenway Ave. N. were 4 Am. Golden
Plovers, 35 Black-bellied Plovers, 2 Ruddy Turnstones, and a Short-billed
Dowitcher.

This morning I checked locations in the St. Croix R. valley where in late
fall/early winter I had found a number of Yellow-rumped Warblers inhabiting
juniper stands that had crops of berries. To my amazement, I was able to find 3
that had survived the frigid spell !

This morning a vocalizing Acadian Flycatcher seemed to be lingering in the
woods to the east of the parking lot in Schaar’s Bluff Park. The location is
at the beginning of the easternmost (last) loop of the main path that begins
near the bluff edge.

Around 11:00 a Nelson’s Sparrow was observed in the reeds out from the restroom
building at the Ramsey Co. beach off of Hwy. 96 in the northwest part of White
Bear Lake. A second nearby sparrow was flushed at the same time, but it did
not allow identification.

At about 2:00 today 18 Avocets were observed in a field flooded by the
Vermillion
River at the north end of Prairie Island. This is about ¼ mile east of the
bridge
(Dakota C.R. 68) along Goodhue C.R. 18.

Around 4:00 an adult male Long - tailed Duck was observed on eastern Vadnais
Lake at
the northern end and near the between-the-lakes road. It was in company with a
great
number of Ring - necked Ducks and small number of C. Goldeneyes. Near dusk,
Erik
Collins also was able to observe it.

Around noon a Marbled Godwit was observed at the end of the spit on the
northwest
part of White Bear Lake out from Lake and Stewart Avenues. It was still there
when I
left the area after a half hour or so.

On 3 Feb. the adult male Barrow's Goldeneye, first reported by Bruce Fall on 16
Jan.,
was still present in the same location on the Mississippi River. That is at
Camp
Lacupolis, which is at the southeastern end of Lake Pepin just west of Read's
Landing.

The lower water level of the Vermillion River has resulted in promising habitat
for
shorebirds and waders at the junction of C.R. 18 and Sturgeon Lake Road (road
in to
casino) in the south end of Prairie Island. There was very little activity
there
yesterday morning, however.

away from Lower Afton into a ravine. At the curve there was a Mourning
Warbler as a bonus. Listen for the Hooded Warbler throughout this ravine,
which isn't very long. It seemed to spend more time towards the north end
of the ravine, but it certainly moves around in there.

The Sabine's Gull was observed intermittently this morning by a number of
birders. On one occasion it was observed several times picking food objects
off the road while flying. It eluded an imm. Sharp-shin that made a couple
passes at it.

On a lead from Denny Martin I checked out Rice Lake on June 30. At that
time there was much shallow water (good for herons) with aquatic vegetation,
and the "islands" were all grassy. Even if we experience a long dry spell I
am not inclined to return.

feeding among some Great Egrets. In Yellow Medicine Co. there was still one
Buff-breasted Sandpiper in the NW corner of the lake located 2 mi. north, 2

On Saturday I checked numerous sites in Big Stone C., some in Lac Qui Parle
Co., including Salt Lake (which had a Willet), and found good numbers of
just the commoner shorebirds. But the site with the greatest number was 2
mi. north, 2 mi. east of St. Leo in Yellow Medicine Co.
