Great birding in the fog this morning at Park Point Recreation Area in
Duluth. In three hours: Western Kingbird found by Lars Benson, all 26
regular Northern MN warblers, all the regular flycatchers and thrushes.
Many Yellow-bellied Flycatchers and Philadelphia Vireos, Scarlet Tanager,
Indigo
Flock of about 75 this morning at Whiteside Park in Ely in Northeastern St
Louis County.

Lars Benson and I found a Smith's Longspur in a flock of about 80 Laplands
near Hwy 61 on the road to Black Beach on the Eastern edge of Silver Bay.
Several pipits and a late Least Sandpiper in the same spot.

Lars Benson watched a flock of 200+ waxwings near the bus turnaround
this morning; mostly Cedar Waxwings, but he found at least four
Bohemians in the flock.
Another big fallout today in the fog--during a brief stop early this
morning, it appeared that most were flycatchers and warblers. I also

yards a flock of sparrows (in 30 minutes, 8 species, including
Harris's and Fox), several loons near the sailing club pier, and

At about 4:15 this afternoon (10/31), Pam Benson and I saw a young,
gray-morph Gyrfalcon chasing pigeons in downtown Grand Marais. After about
five minutes of showy (but unsuccessful) maneuvers and stoops, it flew
southeast to Artist's Point and perched in a birch tree. We drove to the
East Bay

to Stickney Pond on the Wildlife Drive at Sherburne National Wildlife
Refuge, he saw a small cormorant together with some Double-crested
Cormorants. The bird was noticeably smaller and longer-tailed.

Lars Benson found a Harlequin Duck at Paradise Beach on Lake Superior this
afternoon (11/25) around 4 pm. It was with a small mixed group of
goldeneyes and Buffleheads.
Also, there were four Long-tailed Ducks and a Northern Shrike at Good
Harbor Bay, plus numbers of both waxwing species and

her yard. As we spoke, she could only see the back of the owl, but presumes
it is a Boreal Owl. She had one in her yard a year or two ago.

I heard a thump on a window a few minutes ago. This is unusual here--my
feeders are very close to the windows, and I haven't witnessed a
feeder crash since I put them there. I walked up to the inside of the
window and saw a Northern Shrike on the ground eating a male House Finch.

This morning, a Northern Hawk Owl was at the junction of Lake Cty Rd 2 and
Hwy 1. Not present later in the morning.
A Great Gray Owl was hunting along Cty Rd 2, a mile south of the jct with
the railroad (the northernmost crossing on 2).

This morning at 8:15, Lars and I saw one Great Gray Owl about a quarter mile
west of Pietz's Road on Aitkin Cty Rd 18. (Thanks to Warren Nelson and Butch

saw another on the Hedbom logging road, 3.5 miles east of its western

Guillemot at Taconite Harbor this afternoon. Hope the bird roosts there

PS Lars and I were birding in Two Harbors this afternoon. I looked out at

Over the past weekend, Pam and Lars Benson and I stayed in a cabin
overlooking Chicago Bay in Hovland. We didn't spend a lot of time birding,
but we did see a few North Shore fall delicacies:
On Saturday, a Pacific Loon (with chin strap) was in Chicago Bay. We watched
it for about ten minutes,
As Don Kienholz wrote, Lars and I came to 40th as he was leaving. We first
saw the dove in flight. It came from the east and flew into the line of
willows along the water's edge on the far western edge of Erie Pier, and
there it sat, hunkered down, maybe to roost?

Linda Sparling found a Northern Mockingbird at Bayfront Park in Duluth
Sunday morning around 8. Sorry for the delay in posting--I misposted this

John Elllis found 40-50 White-winged Crossbills in Douglas County this
afternoon. The birds were a mile west of Rose City on Cty Rd 66, on

This morning at 8:30 two Red Knots were still on the harbor side of Park
Point in Duluth, on the shoreline near the airport docks at the end of the
road. There were also eight Dunlins on the soccer field. Lots of empids and

south from 4th Ave S, I looked up and had a brief, but clear, look at

Kim Eckert just found a Say's Phoebe on Minnesota Point in Duluth. The bird
was on the lake side beach eating insects. Kim was walking south from the
12th Ave beach access and thinks maybe the bird is around 14th or 15th.

This afternoon at around 4:00, from the beach at 22nd Ave on MN Point,
Lars Benson and I saw a dark-morph Pomarine Jaeger, an adult winter
Little Gull, a Western Grebe, and a probable Great Black-backed Gull.
The low sunlight behind us made for excellent viewing, but we needed
the scope to see all
Tonight at 7:15, a dark Parasitic Jaeger was right along shore on the
beach near the south end of the recreation area; it was hard after a
young Ring-billed Gull. There were also a couple of small groups of
Sanderlings.

On the way home from dropping son Jonas off at the U, we did a little
birding in West Central Minnesota. On Sunday, between Olivia and
Danube, we followed and had great looks at a Eurasian Collared-Dove
that was flying along the railroad track parallel to Hwy 212. We lost
track of it in Danube, so
Lars Benson found a fall adult Franklin's Gull this afternoon at 27th
Ave West in Duluth. At the extensive exposed sand at this location,
there were also Stilt, Semipalmated, Least, Pectoral, and Baird's
Sandpipers, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Black-bellied Plover, and
Killdeer. Also a young
Tonight at 6:00 pm, Lars Benson and I saw one and heard two Least
Bitterns at the location where Ron Erpelding found them in West
Duluth. The birds were in the marsh on the left side (as you go out
from the parking spot) ALL the way across the lake, almost at the
woods on the far side.
Also at
Yesterday (May 5) Lars Benson found a Louisiana Waterthrush at Wood
Lake in Richfield. It was working the rocks on a little stream near
the far southeastern corner of the reserve.
Today (May 6) a flock of ten Red Crossbills were in my yard in Duluth
for a few seconds before flying south.

on the east side of the jct. of Woodland Ave and Fairmont St. this

Late this morning, on one of the Fall Migration Birding Festival Trips,
Steve and Cindy Broste spotted a bird that turned out to be a
Grasshopper Sparrow in Grand Marais. The bird was moving between the
little grass island in front of the Super America and the lawn of the
Mangy Moose Motel,
Tonight between 5:40 and 6:30 from Lafayette Square, we saw at least
two SABINE'S GULLS, one clearly a juvenile, not sure about the other.
The first was in a group of four gulls of about the same size, but none
of us got a good enough look at more than one at a time. Also saw a
juvenile
The Slaty-backed Gull was sitting placidly on the breakwater by the
Angry Trout Cafe at dusk (9:00 pm) Tuesday night.
We sat and watched it for an hour as we ate supper at a table on the
deck of the Angry Trout. Also, some otters and a beaver swam by. I love
birding in Grand Marais.
