in the yard for a year.
They nested near by (not found) but
not in the box I
Many folks have asked about "our" screech owl.
I check our video camera every day and the owl has
not been in the box. We have not seen the screech
owl yet this fall/winter season.
Maybe the mild weather has allowed it to stay away
from the box.

Park, City of Minnetonka, a Least Bittern flew past me and then landed in
nearby cattails, downstream, at 3:30 pm. It did not call. To get to Jidana Park

It seems to be content to sit at the hole.

Yesterday the owl spent the day sleeping and ripping
up mouse chucks to eat. It did not try to eat it whole,
perhaps because it was frozen. The owl spent a great
deal of time sitting on the mouse, perhaps to thaw it.

Yesterday, from 3:45 pm until 5:15 pm, the owl sat in the entry hole.
It then flew out of the box. I turned the camera on at 10 pm and
saw that the owl was not in the box, but had cached a mouse in the box.

10:40 am a Blue Jay spotted the owl sitting in the entry hole and it's cries
sent the owl back into the wood duck box.
It looks like there are feathers in the box now from an overnight kill. There
are also a hand full of pellets.

box at noon. It has now dropped into the box and appears on the video camera to
be sleeping. Because it is warm today I expect the owl will spend much of the

Yesterday morning the owl had a deer mouse and a meadow vole stored in the box.
It fed on them off and on throughout the day and into the evening. It was
feeding at 10:30 pm last night. It never did sun itself or come out of the box

Tuesday, Jan 6, the owl was not in the box at 8:15 am.
It was out of the box when I checked during the day Monday and during the night
at 10:30 pm.

Monday, Jan 5, the owl was not in the box at 8:15 am.
Yesterday it did not sun mid-day at all, staying in the box until 3:45 pm when
it was at the hole for just 25 minutes. It then when back in the box and did
not leave until well after dark at 6:30 pm. It was still out when I checked

The owl is now ( 3:40 pm, Sunday ) sitting in the hole of the wood duck box. I
would expect it to be at the hole until it flies out at dusk. Yesterday it was
at the hole continuously until dusk.
It never did sun itself during the middle of the afternoon today.

Jan. 3, 2009 at 10 am, I noted the owl is sleeping
in the wood duck box visible from the street. Look

The red phase Eastern-Screech Owl that was roosting in our wood duck box the
past couple of winters has not returned so far. It did raise a brood with a
gray female again this spring in a box about a 1/4 mile away from us. We heard
