The Black-necked Stilts were seen today (Friday, 6/6 at 11:00 am) at the Herman
sewage ponds in Grant Country.
As earlier reported, the ponds are located 1.2 miles southeast of town on Hwy 9
on the east side of the road.

A Hermit Thrush has repeatedly visited the feeders of Hebe and Jim Shipp who
live in rural Pelican Rapids (Otter Tail Co). Apparently it has been seen since
the 23rd, and was seen again on Christmas Eve/Day.

Subject: Towhee post
The male Eastern Towhee that has been at my feeders in Ottertail
since November has made it to the new year. Unfortunately our CBC
was cancelled so he won't get counted. It was good to see him

was seen down in the river just before you actually reach the trestle.
Based on his previous experiences with Harlequins here, Steve
predicts the bird will stay throughout the winter somewhere along the
river.

An Eastern Towhee continues to show up at the feeders of Jeff
Schultz, who lives near the town of Ottertail in Otter Tail County.
The feeders cannot be seen from a public road, and there is a long
driveway to the farmstead. So if you're interested in visiting his

A male Brown-headed Cowbird has been coming in to our feeders today
(3/23). Recent records suggest that he's about two weeks earlier than
usual for our area.

Thanks to a tip from Steve Millard, we observed an Ibis species at
3:00 this afternoon (11/20) south of the town of Fergus Falls in
Western Township (in the extreme southwest corner of the county).
Even with scopes, the bird was simply too distant for us to determine
anything about it
our mortality.

The colonial nesting islands on two lakes in residential Fergus Falls
(Otter Tail Co) are back in business.
Lake Alice, the bigger lake in the north part of town, has two
islands. The bigger of the islands is now primarily the nesting
island for Double-crested Cormorants with nesting Great
,
Sharp-shinned, and Rough-legged Hawks, and Herring Gull.
Still lots of snow here and very little open water. A friend says:
Spring -- just like Winter but with more snow.

And, speaking of harbingers of Spring, Horned Larks are indeed being
seen state-wide.
On Tuesday (3/3), we traveled across the state following a diagonal
line northwest (on the less heavily trafficked roads) from Goodhue
county in the southeast to our home county Otter Tail in the west-
It was only a few short years ago that the appearance of a single
Northern Cardinal at our feeders would occasion serious jumping up
and down, yelling at the top of your lungs, or even making a late
night phone call to your maiden aunt in Poughkeepsie. More recently
though, they have been
?ve read of eagles swimming but had never witnessed this eagle
placidly floating on the water behavior. Absolutely amazing, but
maybe a little more Life and Death action one would care to observe
before breakfast on a picture perfect morning in autumn?

That Carolina Wren, who showed up at our place at dusk last evening,
has actively returned to our yard in rural Battle Lake. It has been
gleaning insects from the lattice-work on our deck and returning to
the same feeder nearest our deck. It has been reappearing at
intervals of five to

base of the Seven Sisters Preserve is a perfect parking place just
across the road from the lake.
Another highlight was a sweeping fly-by of 50 Common Nighthawks while

A pair of Harlequin Ducks (male and female) are being seen along the Otter
Tail River in the town of Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County.
We (Steve Millard, Eddy and Judy Edwards, Dan Thimgan) saw the birds this
evening (1/11) at 5:15 p.m. We observed them for only about five minutes
before

Lake Reserve. The bird flew directly overhead, hassling
numerous ducks in flight, who seemed to be milling around
in disarray. The bird then headed south over Hwy 55.

The Chestnut-collared Longspurs have returned to their favorite spot in Clay
County along the Longspur Highway in the Felton Prairie area. We saw a
loose flock of at least five individuals up close and personal at about noon
today (Thursday).
