My sense of Minnesota County boundaries is not yet accurate. Alas, the
Black-backed Woodpecker is in far southern Dakota County, not Goodhue County.
The MOU website lists January 12th, 1930 as the last date for a Black-backed in
Dakota County, but my understanding is that there have been others

Today at approximately 2:00 PM while in the conifer plantation in Carleton
College's Cowling Arboretum I found a female Black-backed Woodpecker (the
eastern part of the 'Arb' is in Goodhue County). The bird was easily
approached, appeared to have three toes, did not make any vocalizations, and
Black-backed Woodpecker still present on Blue Hill Trail, Sherburne Refuge
this morning. It's on the western edge of the conifer trail, just as one
turns north.
December 1st will mark five years of personal birding in the refuge area,

While doing my Breeding Bird Survey Route in Carlton County I found a
Black-backed Woodpecker nest with very active young. Both the male and female
were feeding the vocal young.
The nest is 1.25 miles west of Mission Road (CR25) on the Ditchba
May 29th while hiking on the Astrid Lake Trail off the Echo Trail in
northern St Louis County, there was a male Black-backed Woodpecker,
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and Connecticut Warbler. Park at the trail
parking lot, but then walk the road to the hiking trail where it crosses the

I had the privilege of seeing a female Black-backed woodpecker twice at my
house today. The first time I was walking along a path at the edge of a
white pine woods, and I heard a tapping. I thought it might be a Hairy, so I
scanned the trees above but saw nothing. Then I looked down at a large whit

Gooseberry Park. It was in the middle of a birch wood, pounding away.
