If the audio/video is in sync then I could do that hardware mod and buy
a set of speakers that decode the ac3, but I don't believe the optical
output changes the sync situation.

The vob was wrong, I think I now have it working properly, so I can
watch the vob with ac3 5.1 on mythtv and mp2 stereo (not that the telly
is stereo) on the mvpmc!!

I believe skip forward/back does it in 30 second chunks.
Is there anyway to change this default?
When skipping over adds, it is nice to go forward 30 secs and then back
10 secs to find the start of the show.
I have never got commercial skip to work on mythtv.
