I had mysql running fine on linux (redhat 7.1 ).
Today I get this error: "can't connect to local Mysql server through socket
'/tmp/mysql.sock.'

I've had similiatr problems setting passwords on my redhat box.
Tried % mysql -p -u root mysql:
Got error message:
"Access denied for user root@localhost" (using password:YES)

Does you /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock exist ?
If not, try connecting through TCP/IP by removing localhost and writing
"127.0.0.1:3306"
