I have had exactly the kind of trouble you are talking about. Sorry I
didn't see the messages until just now. Had to manually remove crap too
even though I purged (rpms - centos I think). Hopefully this will help
others down the road.

The Synaptic checkbox menu has a Mark for Removal and Mark for Complete
Removal. Complete Removal seems to be same as Purge; when I look at
details, it says the configuration files are being removed.
