So, Workbench loads, but I don't see any way to connect to my mySQL

supports MySQL.
It does not yet do diagramming, but it's being worked at for v3, as well as

2) was the rpm which I converted to a tgz file (slackware) 3) was the
compiled binary version of the workbench. Here are the filenames
mysql-workbench-1.0.6beta-1.i386.rpm
