The seller evidently had 20 of these tubes. After I bought one and made my
posting. (I thought it was a good idea to buy first!) The sales went on at
a good clip. Somebody must have a use for them as they bought 10! I ended
up buying a total of 5 as the seller would not sell to buyers outside the
Let's see who will win the race to make the first clock with these
tubes :-).
I still wonder how it will scan a character, do you set the X-Y
voltages for the character and then perform a scan of the character,
or do you scan a series of characters slice by slice? If you want your
signal to be

Indeed, I see you got it right :)
Anyhow, I got it all fixed. I just lowered the power supply to 180V.
Of course, I had to recalculate all the anode resistors (finally have
individal anode resistors), but the blanking now works just fine.
But still, I don't understand why I should blank one nixie
I just took another look at the schematic you provided, you're right.
You don't need to do cathode side blanking. For some reason, I thought
that you had both nixies in the pair connected to the same 74141 and
would need to blank cathode side in order to address a single nixie.
Since you have

OK thanks.
AJ, can you tell us where you have found this?
Can you send me a datasheet?
Thanks

Hi,
I stumbled across cathode equalizing resistors in the GR10G
datasheet (http://www.jb-electronics.de/html/elektronik/nixies/
n_gr10g.htm?lang=en). They say 8k2 and 4k7 resistors are required to
account for the smaller size of 1 and 7.
Have you seen equalizing resistors mentioned for other
Well, the higher the anode voltage you use, the less important are the
equalizing resistors.
For the CD47 250V are recommended at the datasheet, and this voltage
equalizes the cathode current automtically.

Basically, make sure your current does not excess the values speciefied
in the datasheet (and check it on each digit). In some cases, there
might be a noticeably discrepancy between digits with large areas (like
8) and digits with rather small areas (a decimal point, for example).
