Had similar problems with my ATI RAGE II video card.  I am new to this Linux stuff too and took me forever to get the video set correctly. I finally went into xf86config and manually set the video to 800x600 for all 4 settings.  Choose no virtual screens  It works fine now.   Also my kppp

I know this is bordering on a "habit" -- that is, me asking for Linux help -- I have no problems building Win 95/98 systems (and NT to an extent), but this is definitely new territory.  I purchased "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Linux" by QUE books, which comes with Caldera OpenLinux v1.3.
