Thanks SigmaX it is working now.
A little strange though, when I installed a few days
ago, there was a message saying to use sndconfig. I
tried under root but it would not be found.
Since then, I had replaced the NIC with a couple
different ones until I found one that would finally be
detected.

Installed and runs fine without the USB in place.
I have conducted all the updates but still no luck booting with the USB
mouse in place.
For the time being I have placed a PS2 mouse to get me though until we
can work out how to sort this one out.
