Here is what I did:
Go to the Linux-Mandrake site. Look for the link to HardDrake (LHS under
the curly-haired penguin). Download the 3 detect-xxx files and
HardDrake. You will also need to go to the LM RPM's and get the alsa
RPM. Install all of the above as root - these are all newer than the
one
There are 3 or 4 RPM's : egcs-XXX
The egcs-c++ contains the header files. I believe that the full set of egcs's
has everything for gcc, g++, g77 .
Yes it is strange. I setup as "developer". Now, if one is a "developer",
presumably one would occasionally be called upon to "develop" some code and

I had a similar problem with an onboard chip on an ASUS board. Go to the
Mandrake website, click on the HardDrake link (under the curly-haired
penguin) there are 4 rpm's to download and install detect-xxx and
harddrake itself. You will also need the alsa rpm. Load these and then
run harddr
Newer machines have the CD second in the boot chain after the floppy.
Try just putting the CD in and reboot - RH and Mandrake CD's are
bootable. Worked for me.

Actually I found @Home to be just fine. On the install I specified DHCP (dynamic
address) and that was all I had to do. As soon as I was up and running I popped
Netscape and was ready to go. A little configuring of the mail server, but
nothing much and that was good too. Actually it was much easie
