I'm off-base, but what is the point of a separate /root partition? It seems that there should be no problem leaving /root as a part of /. /root is the superuser's home directory. I make a /root partition for the same reason I make a /home partition: If I have to reinstall or something, I can

New development: I attempted to use PartitionMagic to make the Linux partitions after the installer failed. I didn't get very far... PartitionMagic reports a partition table error #120. Would someone with a PartitionMagic manual tell me what that means adn how to correct it?
