Here is what is happening: Modemconf detects the modem
on ttyS0. Modem Query goes well

I made a tiny change in the modem settings ... changed
it from 57600 to 38000 or therabouts ... and got
online.
I was happy to be surfing until I realized the
persistent symtom was there ... as with the internal
PCI hardware modem ... first session online for hour
and 20 ... then got message
