Well, I solved the login on startup problem with a simple workaround -
changed from kppp to wvdial. In case anyone's interested, here's a
mini-howto.
1. Become root
2. Install wvdial
$ urpmi wvdial
3. Generate the configuration file
$ cd /etc
$ wvdialconf wvdial.conf
