is there an overall volume control for the speakers, such as that
other OS has? some of the sounds with flash, etc. can be a bit
loud for an office environment *g*. it shouldn't be relevant for
this, but i'm using 9.0.

quickstart bar. Here is how to do it.
Open KDEMenuMultimediaSoundKmix
This will pull up the free standing mixer. Set the controls gow you like them

You can always run aumix from the command prompt. I don't use KDE, so I can;t
tell where it is hidden in the menus...
