Well, there's a shutdown button on the login panel which will close things
down in an orderly manner, and there's the shutdown command.
'man shutdown' for all of the gory details.

Thanks for info all... The problem was I didn't have an option to shutdown
or restart after logging out of X.. it just took me to a screen with only
the option of logging back in.
I reinstalled everything.. actually I didn't like the way I did the
original partition so that was the reason for

Use your last eterm/kterm etc and type shutdown -h now . It will bring the
system to a hold and if you have a atx board shutdown the mashine immediately.

I use "reboot" which I understand is an alias for a more involved
command.

Getting where I want to go with Linux...
If you have a graphical login, select the shutdown tab and select shut down,
or shut down and reboot. If you are user (not sure, but I think only root
can do this) I just type "shutdown now", or "reboot".

Bryan, it's supposed to take you back to the log in screen - from there you
are given several choices: to shut the system down; to restart X; or the
reboot the system. Click on the shutdown button and you should see these
choices. This is similar to the logging off dialog box you get in MS
