[newbie] Argh! Accented characters (again)

On my SuSE 8.2 system I can type accented characters on this UK keyboard by using AltGr as a 'dead key' - ie, AltGr-; then e gives é. I just tried that on a Mandrake 10.0 Community installation and ... nothing. No accents. I've Googled on this and have found loads of highly confusing and
