Hi chaps,
I have a weird problem on a site which I can't explain, at all. I'm
thinking of calling the ghostbusters !
Site A has three printers. All networked, all plugged in to a switch
(unmanaged alas) along with about 20 thin clients. These are all

I ran into a similar situation a few months back. I'd tried all the
suggested free tools, and they all failed for one reason or another.
Acronis makes a migration tool that does this, and it worked well.

Yes. You can use any XP product key that goes with the media you have on
hand. If it won't activate, MS is supposed to approve the activation over
the phone once you explain the downgrade situation.
All that is pretty much laid out in the downgrade rights pdf file which is
easily googled.

clarification on OEM Vista.

That's kind of the rub, right? You still have to have your own XP media and
key unless your computer mfg will provide it.
Lenovo has a downgrade program and for something like $10 they will send you
the package with a key.
I just got the wife and kids a new Dell PC and immediately downgraded
FYI - we've run into issues locating XP drivers for newer machines which
came loaded with Vista. Make sure you have these available, especially
the SATA drivers, when you begin to install XP. You may have to
slipstream them into you XP installation media.

For cloning disks that have multiple partitions, Ghost and DriveXML
don't really cut it...
I use 'SelfImage' since it will copy all the partition/tables, and then
use a partition sizing tool to expand the partitions into the new free
space. Partition magic or gparted...
I just used the live gparted disk on a couple of machines, linux and windows.
Works like a champ, and is free. Between that and Clonezilla, I'm
giving Ghost the boot.
I'm sure there are other products that do more, and work better in
large environments, but for me these two do all that I want.
