of a change using Word, Word would insert a zillion lines of crud code. As
far as I could tell, its sole purpose was to let the next person working
on it know someone else had used Word.

No. Thats exactly how it does it.
Its absolutly sickening to behold.
Unfortunatly the MS sharepoint creator makes the same messy code.
