This afternoon I trekked out to Robert Moses State Park's Democrat Point,
to check for shorebirds and anything Hurricane Bill might have sent
this way.

heavy thunderstorms. The puddles were very large and bode well for

photographed a pair of Common Ravens flying over. This was a first for me on

This morning on my way out to Jamaica Bay I checked in on Floyd Bennett Field
and the Brooklyn Golf driving range, however there were not many shorebirds
around (5 Black-bellied Plovers flying around the driving range). As they say

Following what has been the worst summer doldrums I can ever recall in the
county, Lance Verderame, Arlene Borko and I had a great day today. The storms
of the last two days really brought us some special birds. As Arlene and I
were headed up-county, Lance called to inform us he had found a
The puddles on Hulbert Rd received a much-needed shot of rain yesterday and
today, probably over an inch. They are now nearly as full as I have seen
them this summer. This morning there was a big increase in the shorebirds
as well, since my last check on Wednesday afternoon. The highlights were
It seems certain what I saw yesterday at Jamaica Bay WR was a young Hooded
Merganser. I observed the bird with Rob Jett and he sent me these two links to

noticed a small flock of about 6 Northern shovelers and noticed a small
grebe-like bird smimming through the flock. Immediatly I though it was a
Pied-billed Grebe but I remained looking closely at the subtle details
