On the ocean in front of the swale at West End 2 a Brown Pelican was seen 75
yards off the beach. It disappeared while I was scanning the flocks of
shorebirds and gulls and was gone when Stan came by. A probable Am Golden
Plover was on the water's edge there. Also a Marbled Godwit at the Coas
Currently, a brown pelican on the bay side of Tiana Beach, on the floating
docks west side of the parking lot. Dune Rd has much water covering pavement,
but it is passable with caution.

I have been quite amazed and impressed at the historic occurrence of
pelagic and perhaps other storm-related birds in NY (and in
neighboring states and provinces as well) that have been reported to
this and many other birding list-serves and
Nickerson Beach, Nassau Co, NY 31 Aug.
About 7:30 this morning, while I was surveying the beach, a tern came out of
the morning sun flying down the middle of the beach and almost directly
overhead. It looked a bit different and I followed with my bins until it landed
in one of the numerous pudd
Bob Kurtz found a Buff-breasted Sandpiper at parking Field 7 at Heckscher State
Park this morning. At about 12:00PM we relocated the bird feeding in the
(mostly) dry, grassy portions of the parking lot. The Buffie was joined by a
Baird's Sandpiper that eventually joined a flock of feeding peep.
In case anyone wanted a corrected Post Storm Species list here it is. The
changes are:
- Black-capped Petrel moved to correct family grouping
- Albatrosses, Petrels, and Shearwaters arranged in correct AOU taxonomic order
- Magnificent Frigatebird added to list
- Audubon's Shearwater added to lis
Just a heads-up - for most of New York State (north of Long Island) Canada
Goose hunting season opens tomorrow - SEPT. 1st and runs through SEPT.
25TH.
Keep that in mind if you are going out birding this weekend.
