Not one of my trucks is completely original, though they all are mostly
stock, and with one exception you'd have to know what you were looking at
before you could identify any modifications.
Only one of the 11 trucks I own (including the three too new to be talked
about here) still have the origin
If you go by "Consumer Reports", the Duralast is a better battery than the
Die Hard. And yep, Duralast is AutoZone's house brand. I 'think' the
Duralast is cheaper than the Die Hard, too. Wal-Mart's "EverStart"
batteries are rated pretty high by CR, also. And they're the cheapest of
all.

Yes it's a 261 from a 59 (3759365). I figured this old Fram was too small.
I have searched far and wide for an original filter as shown in the 1959
Manual but they must be rarer then hens teeth. I'll keep looking for one
and use a spin on in the meantime. Thanks.

I see you have a 261. That where filter goes? Those engines in later years had
full pressure oil filters, not those little ones like you have apparently.
Those little lines were the standard on 216 and 235 engines when they were
used. If you have the bigger fittings on block, I bet you have one
I'm adding my opinion late here, but that sounds like the bracket for the
clutch pedal return spring and the brake pedal spring.Tom in N.J.

I thought that sure is strange. I been running the 6 volt starter on my 235
for years without a hitch.

I am looking at my restored Fram Oil Filter that I was going to put on my 261

Ok Nick
I just looked at my cross member again and the area
under the pads is smooth flat on my truck. Not raised

Okay Rhoni, you won half the prize. I Went into my box of linkage and in there
I put a copy of the manual page Section 6, Sheet 4.0. It clearly shows the
brake return spring on the top hole and clutch return spring on the bottom
hole. Thats the problem with 3 year (or more) restorations. You
Ken: Thanks for the input. Its the area under these pads that I am worried

area that is raised up and spider cracked. I am aware of the adjustment for

IIRC , the ring 6 & 12 volt gears cannot be swapped as the inner
diameter is different , you must needs count the teeth then use the
correct starter to match the ring gear as the flywheels are indeed
interchangeable .
The good news is this : 6 volt starters last almost forever on 12
volts ,
Just make sure you use the starter from the 235 along with the 235 flywheel;
the tooth count is different & the 216 starter won't mesh with the 235
flywheel.

Words to be etched in stone above our forums heading:

Mine will be considerably less stock after I get my new to me Napco
running gear under it! I still have to find brake stuff for it, clean
up and maybe rebuild the front axle, and install everything, but it is
slowly happening.
But it's a '57 Napco axle going under a '58 Chevy, so it was obviou
Auto Zone has the Duralast but are these they house batteries? How would they
stack up to say a Die Hard? As they are both about the same price.

Just looked at my rad support and it has two elongated

where it bolts to the cross member. Between the

raise the brace up off the cross emeber about 1/4". I

I just noticed that under the steering box, mounted inside the frame rail, is a

end of each leg of the bracket. Anybody have a clue what this is for?
