Our experience with the AutoDock mailing list with members-only posting is
pretty
positive. When a user registers to the mailing list, his/her first post needs
to be
approved once, then future posts get straight to the mailing list.
Spam messages can be either ignored or rejected.

I don't think this is a good idea. I don't want to find out if the spammers
have figured out how to sign up for mailing lists. If

filtering. There is a list of existing non-members with posting rights
on the mailman interface,
