Ok, I just installed mplayer from blastwave and it seems to work fine, although
some file types were not playable. gmplayer is the gui version and it seems to
be an ok substitute for vlc? We'll see later, when I'd tested it a bit.

No, you incorrectly assume that everybody gets mplayer from blastwave. I

What ever is wrong with "my build" of Mplayer is wrong for everybody else, for
I installed it from Blastwave.

Had you written `mdb`, I would have been able to deliver a stack trace. I've no
experience with `gdb` whatsoever. As in, zilch.

Oh absolu
I will try MPlayer. Thanx you all, for your prompt reply. You can always get
help for Linux, but Solaris has a smaller user base, so I was worried about
getting Solaris help. Not any more.

The only "small" problem with Mplayer is that it:
a) crashes often on Solaris
b) doesn't support any k

I'd suggest mplayer for video files and ogle for DVDs
(both from blastwave).

The reason everyone on Windows,Linux wants vlc-player is because it plays a lot
of different films, without bothering with installing codecs. If you say that
MPlayer plays more formats than vlc, then it is a better choice - for me. I
will try that one. Thanx a lot!
BTW, I am talking a lot about

I'd suggest someone *in-the-know* getting on that asap then. Mplayer is most
definitely NOT a replacement for VLC. If I had the skillZ I'd do it myself...
alas, my coding is rusty at best, and that's most likely out of my league.

Orvar,
I use mplayer myself to play video on Nevada build 66.
As Andras mentioned, you could build mplayer yourself with the
same toolkit as the GNOME-on-solaris team uses.
If you like, you could build your own recipe for VLC for
use with the Common Build Environment (CBE) and make use
of the n

I tried to compile latest vlc-player for Solaris 10, but is quite troublesome.
Ive read from

that:
"Well, noone had really compiled VLC under Solaris10. Some files are using some
network conventions not recognised by Solaris. You have to hack
