Java Desktop System is just a brand, it always has been GNOME with a Sun theme.

Actually, I like the default Opensolaris desktop. But if you want something
other than Gnome, under Ubuntu I've used xfce, and like it. (I don't much like
Ubuntu's default look.) I see that they have a binary for Solaris 10.
